May 18 is celebrated annually as International Museum Day. We join in the congratulations and wish our colleagues that their work will be appreciated, as well as bright ideas and new educational projects.
The history of the holiday is closely connected with the creation in 1946 of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the main goal of which is to provide comprehensive support to the activities of museums. Representatives of more than 115 countries, including the USSR, joined the work of the Council.
For the first time, the celebrations were held in 1978, at the initiative of the Russian National Committee, and today the holiday is widely celebrated in 150 countries of the world. After all, almost every state has museums that make up its national treasure.
The Volgograd Museum of Weights and Measures, in fact, is a museum of the enterprise. However, his collection goes beyond the generally accepted concept of a factory museum and solves the important task of preserving, studying and popularizing the world history of scales as one of the most important and oldest inventions of mankind. In fact, the Museum of Weights and Measures is the only museum in Russia whose collection is entirely devoted to scales and is open to the general public.
In honor of the holiday that has already become a professional one for us, we invite you to touch the wonderful world of ancient scales as part of the international action "Night of Museums".
Congratulations on International Museum Day!
