Ancient scales for eggs
Presently, no one is surprised by the fact that in modern Russian shops eggs are sold in tens. However, it was not always like this. Once in our country, eggs were sold in any random way: usually in containers, sometimes by weight or apiece, there were no general rules. The tradition of selling eggs in packages came to our country from the British. Although, if in Russia it became customary to sell eggs in tens, in England they were traditionally sold in dozens.
It is of interest that for a long time the idea of selling eggs in packages was resisted by sellers, because the recommended price was calculated without taking into account the weight of the product. The problem was solved by introducing categories of eggs, and the price became directly dependent on the weight. Standard categories of eggs, as we know them now, came into common use in the first half of the XX century, and have not changed significantly since then. The appearance of special scales for weighing eggs also refers to that time. They were used to determine the weight category of the product for sale, as well as to select the most suitable fertile eggs for chicken incubation. Photographs of ancient scales for eggs are presented in this section.
